John James Abert letters to W.G. Williams, 1838-1844.

Five ALS and one printed circular letter, signed, written by John James Abert, Bureau of Topographical Engineers, to Captain W.G. Williams in Buffalo, New York. The ALS concern Williams's work in the U.S. Lake Survey, referring to harbor construction, reporting of accounts, and damage to works at Cattaraugus Creek, New York, and other harbors caused by a storm in October, 1844. Four of the letters are written in an unidentified hand and signed by Abert; one is both written and signed by him. The printed circular letter, dated November 15, 1844, concerns negligence by officers in maintenance of the Bureau's instruments and briefly refers to the introduction of Patten's circumferenter for use by the Corps.
